​A Cake Smash session is the ultimate way to celebrate your baby's first birthday.

A playful, baby-led experience that captures this special stage - expressive, curious and wonderfully messy - exactly as they are at this age.

Most cake smash sessions take place a few weeks before your baby's first birthday so the images are ready in time to celebrate their big milestone.

Every cake smash session is personalised to you.  Before your session, we will plan the colours and theme to suit your baby and your style.  I provide all props, decorations and a professionally made cake.

A Cake Smash session is a 3-in-1 session:​

​1.  Clean Portraits
Before the cake makes its appearance, we start with photos of your baby with the themed setup - beautiful images to celebrate this milestone, mess-free (for now!)

2.  The Cake Smash
The cake is then introduced and the fun begins - exploring, squishing, tasting and making a beautiful little mess.

3.  The Splash Session
After the smashing is done, your little one is cleaned off in the clawfoot tub or rustic washbasin - a fun and playful way to finish the session and, often where we capture the biggest smiles.

Everything is taken care of for you - simply arrive with your little one and enjoy the experience.

Cake Smash sessions are relaxed and never rushed, giving your little one plenty of time to settle in, explore and have fun.

Celebrate your little one's first birthday with a cake smash session designed to capture all the personality, curiosity and messy fun that comes with this special milestone.  From the styled setup and professionally made cake through to the splash session at the end, everything is thoughtfully planned so you can simply enjoy the experience with your baby.

Your session is secured with a $200 booking deposit, with the remaining balance due prior to your session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are Cake Smash sessions held?

Cake Smash sessions take place in my professional studio at 27B Royal Arcade, Timaru.

How long will the photoshoot take?

Cake smash sessions can take up to one and a half hours.  This allows plenty of time for baby to get comfortable, portraits before the cake, the cake smash itself and the bath session at the end.  
Every baby is different - some absolutely love it and could keep going, while others may decide they've had enough very quickly.  Sessions are always baby-led, so they may finish sooner depending on your little one's mood.

Are the decorations and the cake all included?

Yes - everything is included!  I provide all the decorations and styling to match your chosen theme, so you don't need to organise a thing.
The cake is professionally made to suit the look and feel of your session.  If there's something special you'd like to include such as a sentimental item or specific prop - you're very welcome to bring it along.

What if my baby doesn't like the cake?

That's completely ok - most babies don't actually eat much cake!  Some love getting messy and diving straight in, while others prefer to gently poke and explore.  No matter how your baby reacts, we'll capture beautiful images that celebrate this special milestone.  And if there's plenty of cake left at the end, you're welcome to take it home with you.

What if my baby has allergies?

If your baby has allergies or dietary requirements, please let me know before your session.  We can arrange an allergen-free cake to suit their needs, or explore alternative options if you prefer.

Do you offer a bath session as well?

Yes!  After the cake smash, we finish with a sweet little bath session.  I have a gorgeous white clawfoot tub and a vintage-style wash basin, both perfect for capturing splashes, bubbles and those big happy smiles.
It's a fun way to clean up and often where we capture some of the cutest expressions - especially if your little one wasn't too sure about the cake!

When do we receive the images?

Your private online gallery will be ready within 7 days of your session.  Once you have selected your favourite images, they will be professionally retouched and delievered within 2 weeks. Printed products typically arrive within 4-8 weeks.
